Overview

10.2MP APS-C sensor Up to 3fps burst rate 11-point AF system D-Lighting exposure balancing feature 100-1600 ISO range The Nikon D80, launched in 2006, presents a step up from the beginner-level DSLRs offering a more robust frame and a number of features aimed at the more advanced user. The 10.2MP APS-C sensor is capable of producing some eye-catching images, with a 100-1600 ISO range and a 3fps burst rate allowing for low light and action photography. With an 11-point autofocus system even if a fast moving subject moves across the frame it can be captured with ease. The sections of the AF system can be manually selected as well, making it simple to keep a slightly off-centre subject sharp without reframing. Combined with the 3D Matrix Metering II system even an absolute beginner can shoot a sharp, well exposed image. Having a 3fps burst rate in partnership with the 11-point AF system makes action photography relatively straightforward, so capturing a family pet or child in motion can be achieved at the touch of a button. To continue the theme of speed, the D80 can be powered on in 0.18 of a second, with an 80ms shutter response. So even if an incident is occurring and the camera is not powered up the moment need not be missed. The D-Lighting mode automatically balances the exposure of shots where light levels are difficult to meter correctly. This is performed instantly after the photo is taken, making scenes with harsh sunlight and deep shadow less of an issue. The red-eye reduction function can be utilised after shooting as well, making a post-shoot editing far less necessary. In spite of being over 6 years old, and having been replaced by the D90, the D80 still has plenty to offer the advancing photographer. With a feature set that has plenty of impressive elements and excellent build quality the D80 continues to be a superb choice.
